Chew Treat Dangers
Chew treats are very popular among dog owners.
Dogs love them and they help clean your dogs teeth. But can they be
harmful? Many veterinarians would say yes and caution you to supervise
your dog's use of chews.
What Are The Dangers of Chew Treats?
There are many different kinds of chew treats.
There are those made from rawhide, those made from compressed
vegetable protein , rubber chew treats, etc, etc, etc.. When playing with
an edible chew your dog may not completely chew them before swallowing
them. They can chew the rawhide or other treat until it softens and then
swallow it. With rubber chews, they could possibly break a piece off and
swallow it. The softened piece of dog chew or piece of rubber can become
lodged in your pets throat obstructing its airway. It could also get
lodged in your dogs intestinal tract causing a serious blockage. An
intestinal blockage can kill your dog if they are not operated on quickly.
How Do You Know If Your Dog Has A Blockage?
Signs of an intestinal blockage include:
*Vomiting
*Refusing to Eat
*Regurgitating Food
*Diarrhea
*Abdominal Pain
If you suspect an abdominal blockage contact a
veterinarian as quickly as possible.
How Do You Prevent Problems?
To prevent problems associated with chew toys,
monitor your dog when they are chewing them. Take the chew away from them
when it gets too small and choose a chew of appropriate size. Read the
packaging on the product to determine what size is right for your dog.
Also choose dog chews that are durable enough that your dog can not chew
them up too quickly. They should be strong enough to hold up well, yet
soft enough to not hurt their teeth.
